Posted by RSE on February 21, 2013 in Writing Tips |

When you write, think tight. The goal is not to reduce every sentence to its most concise form but to avoid distractingly extraneous wording and phrasing.

The revised sentences are indeed much tighter and flow more easily, but I don’t think that this is due to the advertised reduction in length. In a couple of the examples, the reduction in word count is very modest, and in example three the word count is the same as the original.

I can give one definition of a verbose sentence in any one that contains “subsequently” or any other adverb that is four or more syllables long. …

Yes, this article completely omitted a great way to make verbose sentences shorter: Just replace most of its polysyllabic words with shorter words and short phrases, such as prepositional phrases.

Do You Have The 6 Unique Traits Of A Remarkable Writer?

Posted by RSE on December 21, 2012 in Writing Tips |

I’m looking for those qualities/traits/abilities that we can say a writer does that no other profession can claim. Not an easy task. But here’s my stab at it …

I’ve spent the last four years mentoring about seven writers.

In that time I’ve also evaluated dozens of other writers, without choosing to mentor them. I saw something in those seven that I didn’t see in the rest.

That “something” I saw was a set of qualities that I think are unique to remarkable writers. And I wanted to start documenting those qualities — those things that make writers stand out from the rest of the population…

These are definitely things we all should think about and emulate.

Do you have it right? – Facts are More Important Than Being First

Posted by RSE on December 17, 2012 in Writing Tips |

Thanks to technology, everyone who wants to be a writer and publisher can easily do so online. Unfortunately, this ease has resulted in a lot of unease about how information is disseminated.

Early online information about the recent massacre of children and adults at a Connecticut school is a case in point. Initial reports identified the killer as a man named Ryan Lanza, though, as it turns out, Lanza’s younger other, the real perpetrator of this horror, who killed himself, had apparently used his other’s identification during the incident.

It is such a vital facet to make sure what you write is accurate.  We, so many times see where a story has to be retracted or at least amended.  The quoted article contains great tips for accuracy.
